Installation for „unORTnung“
former Ankerbrotfabrik, Vienna (A)
photos: Gregor Graf, Paul Horn
The first time I was visiting the exhibition room I found a round hole in the floor. Warm air was coming up from the empty floor below. There was a broken window down there.
This hole in the concrete floor of 35cm diameter and the air flow was used to pump up a bubble of very lightweight plastic foil. Opening one northward window of the exhibition room and a few windows on the sunny side facade of the floor below created a thermal lift that was strong enough to keep the bubble inflated. On sunny days the bubble was full, on cloudy days rather floppy.
(„unORTnung“ is a series of projects and exhibitions initiated by Veronika Barnas and Andrea Maria Krenn (until nov 2008). It adapts various empty locations in Vienna and invites artists to create interdisciplinary projects on the spot and to present them to the public. The unused locations within the city – these non-places – are retaken and consciously adapted to be used as temporary alternatives to the established cultural szene.)
